Importance of Studying Liberal Arts
Liberal arts provide the foundation for becoming a good person, emphasizing ethics, philosophy, and morality, while fostering interdisciplinary expertise that could be described as “integrated knowledge.” In Japan, liberal arts are often categorized as part of the humanities, but in the United States, even those studying medicine or science are grounded in the principles of liberal arts. AIU’s approach stems from a sense of resistance to the tendency in Japan to divide fields into humanities and sciences, leading to a siloed way of thinking.

Meaning: The term “tako-tsubo” originally refers to a traditional earthenware pot sunk to the seafloor to catch octopuses. Figuratively, “tako-tsubo-ka” describes the phenomenon of being confined to a narrow, insular world, focused solely on oneself or a small in-group, with little regard for the outside world. In English, it can be loosely translated as “siloing,” “insular thinking,” or “working in a bubble.”
